Phoberus cf. sulcatus (Thunberg, 1787) View in CoL

The identity of the single specimen here reported is unclear. The preliminary identification above was in 2006 made by Riaan Stals of the SANC, but as ‘ Trox sp. cf. sulcatus Thunberg. ’ No voucher specimen could be tracked down in the SANC, probably having been returned to the student from whose project the specimen originated. Current research shows that this beetle could not have been “true” Phoberus sulcatus , which is now known not to occur even close to the region where this beetle was captured (Strümpher et al., in preparation).

SOUTH AFRICA: GAUTENG. A specimen was collected in sand near bat guano in a cave of the Cradle of Humankind World Heritage Site ( Marais & Durand 2006). For the time being, we consider this an incidental occurrence.

New record of a trogid species in a cave and possibly associated with bat guano.
