Phthiarella decens Brailovsky and Barrera , new species

Diagnosis. This species is included in the group “decorata ” and close related to P. caliginosa here described by having the pronotum entirely black with bluish green metallic reflections and without yellow to yellowish orange transverse fascia. In P. decens sp. nov., the corium is black with bluish green reflections and with complete yellow transverse fascia and abdominal sterna III-IV yellow to yellowish orange. In P. caliginosa the corium is entirely metallic green without yellow transverse fascia, and abdominal sterna III-IV entirely metallic green.

Description. Holotype male. Body length 17.40. Head: length 2.30; width across eyes 2.25; interocular distance 1.35; interocellar distance 0.52; preocular distance 1.20; length antennal segments: I 4.38, II, 4.52, III, 3.30, IV, 6.30; pronotum: total length 2.75; maximum width across humeral angles 5.20; scutellum: length 1.97; width 2.15.

Dorsal coloration. Head metallic bluish green with short yellow spot behind each ocelli; antennal segment I black with metallic bluish green reflections, II–IV black to dark brown; pronotum, scutellum and connexival segments III–VII black with upper border with bluish green reflections; clavus bluish green with apical angle of claval commissure yellow; corium black with bluish green reflections and with complete wide yellow transverse fascia, touching the apex of claval commissure and reaching the costal borders; hemelytral membrane dark brown with bluish reflections; dorsal abdominal segments III–V orange, VI–VII black. Ventral coloration. Head metallic green with short yellow spot at each side of midline near collar; rostral segment I metallic green, II–IV dark brown to black; pro-, meso-, and metasternum yellow; propleura metallic green; meso-, and metapleura metallic green with inner border of meso-acetabulae and inner margin of meta-acetabulae yellow; anterior and posterior lobe of metathoracic peritreme yellow; evaporative area black; coxae and trochanters yellow, femora black with metallic bluish green reflections and basal joint yellow; tibiae black with bluish green reflections; tarsi black; abdominal sterna III–IV included the pleural abdominal margins yellow; V–VII including the pleural abdominal margins and genital capsule metallic bluish green.

Structure. Head. Rostrum almost reaching middle third of abdominal segment IV. Thorax. Humeral angles with short acute spine directed outward. Genital capsule. Posteroventral edge sinuate; lateral angles rounded, slightly folded inward. Parameres. Figs. 72‒73.

Variation. Abdominal sternite IV yellow with posterior margin metallic green.

Female. Unknown.

Etymology. From the Latin “ decens ” meaning proper and referring to the general shape.

Type locality. Ecuador, Province Napo, Puerto Misahuallí .
