Type species. Orchestia nitida Dana, 1852: 204 .

Included species. P. nitida ( Dana, 1852) .

Diagnostic description. Antenna 1 short, not reaching beyond article 4 of antenna 2 peduncle. Antenna 2 weakly incrassate, article 4 much longer than wide. Mandible left lacinia mobilis 5-dentate. Male and female gnathopod 1 posterior margin of merus, carpus and propodus each with palmate lobe. Male gnathopod 2 palm evenly convex. Pereopod 7 subequal in length with pereopod 6. Coxal gills plate-like, unbranched. Uropod 1 exopodite without marginal robust setae. Telson View in CoL narrowing distally, lobes separated distally. Oostegite setae with curl tips.

Remarks. The short antenna 1 of Protorchestia nitida (Dana) which does not extend beyond article 4 of the peduncle of antenna 2, together with the weakly incrassate peduncle of antenna 2, distinguishes this genus from all other genera of Protorchestiinae .

Habitat. Supralittoral, mainly under algae and stones, occasionally in tide pools, from mid-water to lower high-water levels (rarely under drift debris at high-water level) on protected and semi-protected beaches, occasionally in brackish water ( Bousfield 1982).

Distribution. Chile: Cape Horn region; Puerto Robalo, Isla Navarino ( Bousfield 1982).
