Diagnosis. Mandibles lacking premolar tooth; antennae with 10 or 11 antennomeres; all visible tergites with well-defined paratergites; deep, basal transversal sulcus at least on visible abdominal sternite 5, except for Romanotyphlus and Paratyphlus where it is present also on visible sternites 2–4, later genus known from northern Africa, Balearic Islands, Iberian Peninsula and Sardinia); maxillary palpi with palpomere 2 strongly dilated, distinctly larger than palpomere 3.

It has exclusively west Palaearctic distribution and is known from the whole Mediterranean region, going from Portugal up to Turkey, northern Africa, Romania and now also from Serbia. Three Balkan genera, (the distribution Figs 89 View FIGURE 89 , 90 View FIGURES 90–91 ) can be separated by the following key:

1 All tarsi with three tarsomeres............................................................ Allotyphlus Coiffait View in CoL

- All tarsi with two tarsomeres............................................................................ 2

2 Antennal club composed of two antennomeres; antennomere 5 about as large as 4 and 6; aedeagus symmetric; parameres strongly enlarged, largely covering distal part of median lobe................................. Cyrtotyphlus Dodero View in CoL

- Antennal club composed of five antennomeres; antennomere 5 larger than 4 and 6; aedeagus asymmetric, parameres of different shape........................................................................... Romanotyphlus Struyve View in CoL
