Diagnosis. Gular sutures confluent in anterior third of length of head capsule, from confluent point not prolonged ahead; labrum dentate; antennae short, with 11 antennomeres, antennomeres 5–10 strongly transverse, 5 wider than 4 and about as wide as 6, antennal club composed from 5 antennomeres, terminal antennomeres lacking sensorial appendages (phaneres); all tarsi with 3 tarsomeres. Genital armature of female indistinct.

Remarks. The genus has three species, all are present in the Balkan Peninsula. It is believed that the natural area of the distribution is southern France, Italy, the Balkans and Turkey and that the parthenogenetic species Gynotyphlus perpusillus was introduced in many countries in Europe.
