Material examined. 1 ovigerous female, st. 17; 1 ovigerous female, 1 subadult female, st. 25.

Remarks. Iphinoe serrata differs from other Mediterranean species for the presence of 4 perianal setae on pleonite 6. The other species that shares this characteristic is I. elisae ; however, I. serrata differs from I. elisae for the presence of 2 aesthetascs on antenna 1 (versus only 1 in I. elisae ). Its sternal process is characterized by a bifid tubercle.

Distribution and ecology. Iphinoe serrata is widely distributed in the Mediterranean Sea: in the Alboran Sea ( Ledoyer 1987; Sánchez Moyano et al. 2001), north-western Mediterranean ( Walker 1901; Ledoyer 1968; Klepal & Kastner 1980; Corbera & Cardell 1995; Cartes et al. 2007), Adriatic Sea ( Zimmer 1942), Aegean Sea ( Katagan 1983), Levantine Sea ( Băcescu 1961), and in Abu-Qir Bay ( Alexandria, Egypt) ( Hamouda & Abdel-Salam 2010). Up to now the known distribution of I. serrata had been confined to areas 1, 2 and 9 of the Bianchi (2004) classification ( Marusso 2006). We confirm its presence in sector 9 ( Table 3 View TABLE 3 ). The bathymetric range of I. serrata varies between 50 and 300 m deep ( Corbera 1995). Corbera & Cardell (1995) confirmed that I. serrata is a species from deep environments ( 60–70 m deep), found on muddy bottoms. Our data show that I. serrata is not only present in deep waters (around 40 m), but also occurs in shallower waters ( 13 m).
