Scirpus subgen. Schoenoplectus Rchb.
Perennes, con rizomas reptantes. Hojas basales, reducidas a la vaina o con limbo ± desarrollado. Inflorescencia generalmente ramificada. Glumas emarginadas y mucronadas, uninervias, salvo las basales de cada espiguilla, que suelen tener más de 1 nervio. Aquenios lisos.
