Identity of Clematis napoensis View in CoL

Our observations of living plants within the Napo population of Clematis armandi ( Figs. 6–8 View FIGURE 6 View FIGURE 7 View FIGURE 8 ) clearly indicate that C. napoensis is not essentially different from C. armandi in any characters. Similar to the case with C. jialasaensis var. macrantha , the type specimens consist of also only two short branches, on which no scales of axillary buds are present ( Fig. 3 View FIGURE 3 ). As shown in Figures 6–8 View FIGURE 6 View FIGURE 7 View FIGURE 8 , the plants within the Napo population match C. armandi very well in all the characters. Although large scales of axillary buds are often absent in branches of current year, they are usually present at the base of cymes borne in branches of last years ( Figs. 6C, D View FIGURE 6 , 8 View FIGURE 8 ). In fact, C. armandi is not rare in Napo in southwestern Guangxi, the type locality of C. napoensis . Three specimens of C. armandi from this county are shown in Figure 25 View FIGURE 25 .
