Sounama Distant View in CoL View at ENA

Sounama Distant, 1908: 105 .

Type species: Sounama imprimis Distant, 1908 , by original designation.

Remarks. This genus is poorly de fi ned at present. In its original description, Distant (1908) noted its sulcate postclypeus (figures 95, 96) which is present in most Rhinaulacini and also in some other tribes (see Introduction). Distant also made special mention of the medial longitudinal carina on the vertex, a feature which is also present in Kanozata , from which it differs in the male genitalia characters noted in the above generic key. This latter feature, although present in most Sounama species , is variably developed and is absent in comes , nigra , dentata and asiatica . Externally this genus is similar to Flosshilda Kirkaldy from the Philippines and Mysol ( Indonesia) but Flosshilda has a shorter, fl atter face. There is also some similarity in the shape of the aedeagus between Sounama and the Philippine species of Flosshilda . Two subgenera are recognized, based on the shape of the subgenital plate and style, as noted in the following key.

Key to the subgenera of Sounama

1 Subgenital plates without a spine-like apical process (figures 58, 62); style apex anvil-shaped (figures 60, 64); southern India........ S. ( Sounama Distant )

⎯ Subgenital plates with a dorsally or dorsoposteriorly directed spine-like apical process (figures 70, 81, 92); style apex foot or hook-like (figures 80, 84). N.E. India (Sikkim), Burma, southern China (including Hainan), Taiwan, Indochina, Philippines, Malay Peninsula and northern Borneo......... S. ( Stenaulophrys Jacobi )
