Besides respecting the efforts of earlier workers, sometimes deliberately disregarded for social or nationalistic reasons ( Mabberley 1991), and recognising their insights and proposals, the bibliographic research needed to ensure precision in plant nomenclature ( Merrill 1949) is not only of importance to taxonomists. As in the case of the chestnut vine, it can also lead to findings that are of interest to historians of botanical exploration besides scholars concerned with the prosopogra- phy associated with plant introductions to horticulture - in this case those made in a particularly obsessive, and commercially competitive, acquisitive period.
