Description
Adults. Body ( Fig. 1a, b View FIGURE 1 ) oblong, strongly flat, shiny; surface scattered with fine punctures, the punctures on mandibles denser. Coloration of body reddish brown to yellowish brown. BL 6.56 mm.
Head: short, HL/HW 0.4; HW/PW 0.9; clypeus projecting anteriorly. Eyes large. Antennae moniliform, 3 rd antennomere slender than other segments, 9 th to 11 th segment ovoid; 1 st and 2 nd antennomeres with sparse short setae; 3 rd to 8 th antennomeres bearing with several long setae around apex; 9 th to 10 th with long setae near base and denser short setae around apex, 11 th antennomere bearing with sparse short setae and with sparser long setae at both base and apex. Mandibles nearly symmetrical, swelling at outer margin, the enlarged part of left mandible slightly more swollen than right mandible. Jugular processes ( Fig. 1c View FIGURE 1 ) stout and asymmetrical; right process bi-toothed at tip; left process having a large sharp tooth at apical third and a small acute projection near apical, apex pointed, bent downward; JLL/JRL 1.3.
Thorax: Pronotum subsquare in dorsal view, gently arcuate at sides/lateral margins; PL/PW 0.875. Scutellum pentagonal, slightly constricted near base, pointed at apex.
Elytra: Elytra oblong, almost parallel from the base up to ¾ of their length; EL/EW 2.5.
Genitalia ( Fig. 2a–c View FIGURE 2 ): oblong; parameres slender, slightly tapered apically, with two pairs of lateral setae in apical ¼ and two pairs long apical setae; median lobe slender, gradually narrowed apically, slightly longer than parameres.
Diagnosis
Prostomis wangxianensis sp. nov. differs from its congeners by its unique characteristics of jugular processes (the bitoothed apex of the right process, and the presence of one large and one small tooth on the left process), and male genitalia, especially the unique pair of long setae on each paramere. This species differs from Prostomis edithae Schawaller, 1991 which is the only species currently distributed in mainland China (Yunnan, Sichuan and Gansu provinces) by the following characteristics: 1) right jugular process with an apical small lateral tooth right before the pointed apex (lacking in P. edithae ); 2) aedeagus slender (stout in P. edithae ); 3) median lobe longer than parameres (shorter than parameres in P. edithae ); 4) apical setae of parameres long (short in in P. edithae ).
Etymology
The specific name of this species is derived from the collecting location, Wangxiantai (望仙台) of Guizhou Xishui National Nature Reserve.
