Type species.
Scytalidium lignicola Pesante.
Notes.
In this study, the phylogeny of Scytalidium was reconstructed using concatenated ITS and LSU sequences from (i) the ex-type strain of S. lignicola (type species of the genus), (ii) ex-type strains of 24 additional Scytalidium species, and (iii) ex-type strains of phylogenetically related fungi in Leotiomycetes, Sordariomycetes, Dothideomycetes, and Eurotiomycetes, as identified through preliminary phylogenetic analyses. The results showed that Scytalidium is a polyphyletic genus spread across at least four classes in Ascomycota (Fig. 1 View Figure 1 ). We formally propose to restrict Scytalidium sensu stricto to a monophyletic group of 16 species, with the exclusion of all phylogenetically divergent lineages currently classified in Scytalidium .
