Holotrichia burmeisteri Brenske, 1892 View in CoL
Although Holotrichia Hope, 1837 View in CoL is a well-used name, it is a junior synonym of Ancylonycha Dejean, 1833 View in CoL , and an application to the International Commission on Zoological Nomenclature is needed to conserve Holotrichia View in CoL as the valid name ( Bousquet & Bouchard 2013; Allsopp & Schoolmeesters 2024).
Brenske (1892) described Holotrichia burmeisteri Brenske, 1892 View in CoL from specimens labelled Philippines, Palau and Austrl. (which he presumed to be Australia). He highlighted three specimens but probably saw more; no holotype was designated. ZMB holds six specimens ( Figs 2 – 7 View FIGURES 2–7 ), five males and one of unknown gender, all of which were labelled as syntypes in 2007. Five are labelled as from Brenske’s collection (three as “cotypes” and two as “types”), and one from Schaufuss’ collection (labelled “Type”). All bear identification labels in Brenske’s handwriting (compare Figs 2–7 View FIGURES 2–7 with Horn & Kahle (1935 –37, tafel III, fig. 6)). To stabilise the nomenclature, I here designate a lectotype and have labelled it and the paralectotypes.

Brenske (1892) and Matsumoto (2008) thought that the presumed Australian record (labelled as “Austrl.”, Fig. 7 View FIGURES 2–7 ) was doubtful. No specimens of H. burmeisteri were recorded by Britton (1978) in his comprehensive revision of the Australian Melolonthini , with the only record of Holotrichia spp. being a single, damaged, presumably transported specimen of H. serrata (Fabricius, 1781) by Blackburn (1890) [as Neolepidiota obscura Blackburn, 1890 ]. No further specimens of H. burmeisteri are known from the Philippines and the location was more recently considered doubtful by Matsumoto (2008). Brenske’s record presumably refers to when Spain administered the Caroline Islands as Nuevas Filipinas. Matsumoto (2008) concluded that the type series came from Palau.
