signorelli Marinoni & Steyskal, 2003 in Marinoni et al. 2003: 26 View in CoL ,
figs. 16, 28 (♂ genitalia; spermatheca)
HT: ♂ [ Brazil] “Est. S. Paulo, Avanhandava, Barra Mansa, Barreto Col. 2-946.” Lost. Lectotype designation needed.
Note 1: According to Marinoni et al. 2003, the holotype was deposited in the MZUSP; however, according to Carlos José Einicker Lamas at the MZUSP (in litt. 3 September 2019 to WLM), it has never been deposited there. Luciane Marinoni reported (in litt. 17 September 2019 to WLM) that she had deposited the type in USNM, but it could not be located there (in litt. Erin Kolski, USNM, 20 September 2019 to Luciane Marinoni). The holotype was not in USNM as of October 2022 (WLM).
PT: ♂ [ Brazil] “Córrego Azul, Araçatuba, SP, III.1947, M/P. Barreto,” USNM; 2♂ [ Ecuador] “Coca, Napo R., Napo, V. 1965, 250 m., L. Peña,” USNM
Note 2: A search of USNM by E. Kolski on 20.IX.2019 yielded two paratypes: one from Brazil with the same label data as noted above for the paratype from Brazil, and one from Ecuador with the same label data as noted above for the paratype from Ecuador except that the collection date is “25–30 IV 65,” not “ V.1965.” Both specimens in USNM are labeled “ signorellerum.” Marinoni (in litt. 24 September 2019 to Erin Kolski, USNM) explained that reviewers had suggested the name change from signorellerum (the manuscript name) to s ignorelli and that both paratypes are indeed signorelli .
DIST: BRAZIL (S ã o Paulo). ECUADOR (Orellana). Map: Marinoni et al. 2003: 32, fig. 42
Note 3: The map by Marinoni et al. 2003 is partly in error. The site in Ecuador is shown as being on the coast, but Coca, Orellana, is in the interior, in the eastern part of the country.
Note 4: Thecomyia signorelli is known from only four specimens, all males, collected at three different localities in two countries. Marinoni et al. 2003 designated all four specimens as types— one holotype and three paratypes. Two of the paratypes were collected in 1965 in Ecuador in Coca, Napo, on the Napo River (Spanish: Río Napo). Coca also is known as El Coca or Puerto Francisco de Orellana. Coca was in the province of Napo when Luis Peña collected there in 1965, but provincial boundary adjustments in 1998 placed Coca in the new province of Orellana.
