Cyclopogon rupestris (Barbosa Rodrigues) Carvalho & Meneguzzo , comb. nov.
≡ Sarcoglottis rupestris Barbosa Rodrigues (1877 View in CoL : index 10). Spiranthes rupestris Barbosa Rodrigues (1877: 189) View in CoL , nom. illeg., non Lindley (1840: 474). Sarcoglottis rupicola Garay (1982: 354) View in CoL , nom. illeg. superfl. Veyretia rupestris Szlachetko (1995: 116) View in CoL , nom. illeg. superfl. Veyretia rupicola (Garay) Barros (2003: 183) View in CoL , nom. illeg. superfl.
Note:— Barbosa Rodrigues (1877: 189) published Spiranthes rupestris Barb.Rodr. View in CoL is an heterotypic and illegitimate name of the earlier homonym by Lindley (1840: 474) ( Turland et al. 2025: Art. 53.1). In an attempt to solve this matter, Garay (1982: 354) published Sarcoglottis rupicola Garay View in CoL as an explicit substitute name for Spiranthes rupestris Barb. Rodr. View in CoL ( Turland et al. 2025: Art. 6.11). Szlachetko (1995: 116) acknowledged the homonymy issue between Barbosa Rodrigues’s and Lindley’s names, thus deliberately intended to combine Spiranthes rupestris Barb.Rodr. View in CoL as “ Veyretia rupestris (Barb.Rodr.) Szlach. View in CoL ”, albeit inadvertently created a second replacement name instead of a combination, hence V. rupestris Szlach. View in CoL ( Turland et al. 2025: Art. 6.12 and 6.13). Later, Barros (2003: 183) combined Garay’s replacement name ( Sarcoglottis rupicola Garay View in CoL ) as Veyretia rupicola (Garay) F.Barros. Nonetheless View in CoL , is important to note that Barbosa Rodrigues simultaneously published Sarcoglottis rupestris Barbosa Rodrigues (1877 View in CoL : index 10) and the illegitimate Spiranthes rupestris Barb.Rodr. As View in CoL a result, this original pair of names is considered to represent alternative names for the same taxon ( Turland et al. 2025: Art. 36.3). Thus, Sarcoglottis rupestris View in CoL is a validly published name and available to be combined to Cyclopogon View in CoL ( Turland et al. 2025: Art. 36.3), hence: C. rupestris (Barb.Rodr.) Carvalho & Meneguzzo. Therefore View in CoL , no replacement names were ever necessary and the names by Garay, Szlachetko, and Barros are all illegitimate superfluous names ( Turland et al. 2025: Art. 51.1).
