Diagnosis. —
This is the larger of the two species in the genus Pterapotrechus (Fig. 4 View Fig. 4 ). Body longer than 30 mm. Tegmina longer than 40 mm, clearly projecting beyond the abdomen. Ovipositor long (> 25 mm) and only weakly recurved upwards (Figs 1 D View Fig. 1 , 2 A View Fig. 2 ). Frons entirely pale (Figs 1 C View Fig. 1 , 2 B View Fig. 2 ). Female subgenital plate trapezoidal, with two keels converging at the base (Figs 1 B View Fig. 1 , 2 D View Fig. 2 ). Male unknown.
Habitat and distribution. —
Rainforests in Australia’s Northern Territory.
Etymology. —
From the Latin longus (adj.), ‘ long’, and cornum (noun), ‘ horn’, after the insect’s very long antennae “ exceeding four times the length of the body ” ( Tepper 1892). ‘ Longicornis ’ is an adjective of the third declension.
