Phanera menispermacea (Gagnep.) de Wit, Reinwardtia View in CoL 3: 513. 1956. Bauhinia menispermacea

(perhaps holotype, designated here): BORNEO,

In the protologue of Bauhinia menispermacea Gagnep., Gagnepain (1912) cited a collection from Borneo by Haviland et Hose which can be considered as original material. De Wit (1956) cited the holotype ( Haviland et Hose 1014P) at K. Larsen & Larsen (1996) lectotypified probably the same collection at K and cited the isotype to be at P. However, we could not be able to locate the lectotype specimen at K. Nevertheless, we could locate another collection ( Haviland 1014, K000760977) from Borneo and it bears a collection date of ‘Feb. 5/92’ signifying Feb 5 th 1892 which differs from the collection date stated in the protologue, i.e. Dec 14 th 1894. Moreover, none of the handwritings in pen or pencil on K000760977 is that of F. Gagnepain. Thus, it cannot even be an uncited original material. Furthermore, the specimen K000760977 bears the number 1014 proceeded by the abbreviation “e.c.e.a”, rather than 1014P. The abbreviation “e.c.e.a” refers date of collection of Haviland’s collections which was well illustrated by Stapf (1907). The number 1014 is the serial number against Bauhinia in the handwritten manuscript entitled ‘List of plants coll. by Dr. G.D. Haviland, Borneo’ ( Haviland, 1892).
According to Stafleu & Cowan (1976), the herbarium and type specimens of F . Gagnepain are housed at P . We could able to locate a pertinent specimen from Borneo by Haviland et Hose 1014 P ( P00798564 ). It also has an illustrative rendering of floral components by Gagnepain on a separate piece of paper. It also agrees with specimen details cited in the protologue. Furthermore, it would be pertinent to say that Larsen & Larsen (1996) cited the P specimen as a duplicate of the K specimen: Haviland et Hose 1014 P . This cannot be proved or disproved as Haviland et Hose 1014 P could not be located at K.
