Types. Two ♀ syntypes of Anthrax celeris Wiedemann , one (with labels) from UNITED STATES: Kentucky (as “ Kentucki ”) [no further data] and “ celer Coll. Winthem ”; the other with just “ Coll. Winthem ” and “ celer det. Winthem ” in NMW (neither seen in this study). Painter & Painter (1962: 90–91) examined the syntypes but did not designate a lectotype.
Holotype ♀ of Anthrax floridana Bigot from UNITED STATES: Florida [no further data] in the BMNH. Type examined. Synonymy by Ávalos-Hernández (2009).
Lectotype ♂ of Anthrax sagata Loew from MEXICO: Tamaulipas, Matamoros [no further data] in MCZ. Type examined; lectotype designated by Evenhuis (1983a: 16). Synonymy by Ávalos-Hernández (2009).
Lectotype ♀ of Anthrax orbitalis Williston from MEXICO: Guerrero, Rincon, 280 ft., Oct., H.H. Smith in BMNH. Type examined; lectotype designated, and synonymy under sagata by Painter & Painter (1962: 120).
Holotype ♂ of Villa ( Hemipenthes) pima Painter in Painter & Painter (1962) from UNITED STATES: Arizona: Tubac, 5 August, 1932, R.H. Painter in USNM (USNMENT 1353446). Type examined in this study. Synonymy by Ávalos-Hernández (2009).
Diagnosis. Most similar to I. minas (Macquart) by virtue of the complete infuscation of the anal cell ( Fig. 11 View FIGURES 10–19 ) and other similar wing infuscation, but can be easily separated from it by the all black scutellum (scutellum with brown dorsolaterally in I. minas ); and the more broad apex to the parameral sheath in dorsal view (narrowed in I. minas ).
Female genitalia ( Fig. 30 View FIGURES 29–33 ). Furca U-shaped with rounded sublateral projections directed mesally; spermathecal reservoir obtuse with acute apex (not smoothly rounded), sclerotized, basal portion membranous with basal bulb approximately the same length as sclerotized portion; apical spermathecal duct relatively short, slightly shorter than spermathecal reservoir complex; ejection apparatus long, thin, length slightly longer thin spermathecal reservoir complex, with small flared, sclerotized apical valve and narrow subconical non-sclerotized basal valve; basal spermathecal duct thin, subequal in length to spermathecal reservoir complex.
Other material examined. MEXICO: Guerrero: 1♂, 3 mi. N. Chilpancingo, 4200 ft., 28 Aug 1959, R . H. & E.M. Painter ( USNM) ; 1♂, 2 mi N. Chilpancingo , 5300 ft., 31 Aug 1959, R . H. & E.M. Painter ( USNM) ; 1♂, 32 mi. N. Chilpancingo , 1600 ft., 31 Aug 1959, R . H. & E.M. Painter ( USNM) ; 5♀, Acapulco , 11 Jun 1935, R . Pritchard ( USNM) ; 1♀, 8 mi N. Taxco , 5500 ft., 16 Sep 1932, H.E. Evans ( USNM) . UNITED STATES: Arizona: 1♂, Tubac , 5 Aug 1932, R . H. Painter ( USNM) ; 1♂, Tucson , 9 Sep 1930, R . H. Painter ( USNM) ; North Carolina: 1♀, Carteret County: Pine Knoll Shores , 13–14 Sep 1987, G.F. & J.F. Hevel ( USNM) ; Texas: 1♀, Davis County, Limpia Canyon, Davis Mountains , 5000 ft., 26 Jul 1946, H.E. Evan ( USNM) .
