Type species: Chiton cinereus Montagu, 1803 (non Linnaeus, 1767) [ = Chiton asellus Gmelin, 1791 , fide Lovén, 1846], by subsequent designation ( Gray, 1847).
Diagnosis. Body small; valves thin with hardly raised lateral areas; tegmentum generally pale with finely gran- ulose; mucro subcentral; no insertion plates; girdle with small scales, sometimes interspersed with spicules or entirely spiculose; major lateral radula teeth with uni-, bi-, or tricuspid cap, the denticle (s) always pointed.
Genus distribution. Worldwide. Triassic to Recent ( Laghi, 2005; Sigwart, 2017).
