Hypolepis poeppigii (Kunze) R.A.Rodr., Gayana Bot. View in CoL 46: 202. 1989.
8, 6: 127. 1920.
Range:— Southern Bolivia ( CH, SC, TA); northern Argentina; central Chile.
Ecology:— Uncommon; terrestrial along humid forest edges; 2000–3100 m, 1450–2800 m in Argentina, 100–500 m in Chile .
Notes:— Hypolepis poeppigii is characterized by inermous petioles and rachises, rachises, pinna-rachises, and costae clothed with both catenate and glandular hairs, glabrous laminar tissue between the veins abaxially, submarginal sori, and absence of pseudo-indusia.
In its submarginal sori lacking pseudo-indusia, Hypolepis poeppigii resembles H. rugosula (Labill.) J.Sm. , a subcosmopolitan species ( Schwartsburd & Prado 2014). Hypolepis rugosula has not yet been recorded in the Andes ( Schwartsburd & Prado 2014, 2015, 2016) but is expected to occur there. Hypolepis poeppigii differs from H. rugosula by the dark brown petiole bases ( vs. burgundy), light brown to stramineous rachises ( vs. burgundy), subequilateral proximal pinnae ( vs. equilateral), and veins glabrous abaxially ( vs. with catenate-glandular hairs).
