Oxynoemacheilus banarescui ( Delmastro, 1982) View in CoL
( Fig. 3 View FIGURE 3 )
Orthrias brandti banarescui Delmastro, 1982: 53 View in CoL , figs. 1–3 ( type locality: Turkey: Devrekani creek near Devrekani, Kocaçay basin)
Material examined. FFR 15511, 4, 43–77 mm SL; Turkey: Kastamonu prov.: stream Devrekanı 8 km northeast of Devrekanı , 41.6275N 33.9224E GoogleMaps .— FSJF 3119 , 30 , 31–67 mm SL; Turkey: Zonguldak prov.: Yenice River 15 km west of Yenice , 41.2325N 32.2041E GoogleMaps .— FSJF 3122 , 6 , 64–78 mm SL; IUSHM 2018–1403 , 10 , 50–62 mm SL; Turkey: Karabük prov.: stream Davulga at 15 km north of Mengen , 41.0872N 32.0230E GoogleMaps .— FSJF 3169 , 19 , 41–70 mm SL; Turkey: Kastamonu prov.: stream Devrekani at Kasaplar, 4 km north of Devrekani , 41.6224N 33.8526E GoogleMaps .
Material used in molecular genetic analysis. FSJF DNA-1626 ; Turkey: Kastamonu prov.: stream Devrekani at Kasaplar, 4 km north of Devrekani , 41.6224N 33.8526E ( GenBank accession: OK316781 View Materials , OK316749 View Materials ) GoogleMaps .— FSJF DNA-1631 ; Turkey: Zonguldak prov.: Yenice River 15 km west of Yenice , 41.2325N 32.2041E ( GenBank accession: OK316694 View Materials , OK316657 View Materials ) GoogleMaps .
Distribution. Oxynoemacheilus banarescui is known from the Devrekani and Yenice/Filiyos drainages in the Anatolian Black Sea basin. See Fig. 2 View FIGURE 2 for the distribution of this species.
Remarks. Oxynoemacheilus banarescui is distinguished from other species of the O. bergianus group by a minimum K2P distance of 2.9% to O. bergianus in the DNA barcode region and it is supported by PTP, mPTP and ASAP. We were not able to find a reliable, consistent external character to distinguish O. banarescui from any of the other species of the O. bergianus group.
Turan et al. (2019) published two sequences (GenBank accession number: MH469261 View Materials , MH469262 View Materials ) of O. banarescui from the stream Devrekani, closely clustering with our sequences from the same drainage. But Turan et al. (2019) submitted three additional sequences ( MH018854 View Materials , MH018855 View Materials , MH018856 View Materials ) to GenBank, which they omitted from the manuscript. Sungur (2020) downloaded all five sequences labelled as “ Oxynoemacheilus banarescui, Devrekani stream: Kızılırmak Basin” from GenBank. The Devrekani does not flow to the Kızılırmak. As Cüneyt Kaya is a co-author of the study of Turan et al. (2019) and the present study, it is now possible to clarify the reasons for this omission. Indeed, the sequences MH018854 View Materials , MH018855 View Materials , and MH018856 View Materials do not originate from fishes collected in the Kızılırmak or Devrekani drainages, but in the Büyük Melen ( 40.8358N 31.1100E) and it is therefore no surprise that they do not cluster with O. banarescui but with O. simavicus from the Büyük Melen in our molecular dataset ( Fig. 1 View FIGURE 1 ).
