Holotype: ♂, “W Africa, MALI / 80 km SW Bamako , / near Ouronina, / 12.1031 N 8.4114 W, / 394 m, 1.2012,” GS 1379 (CGM/ USTTB). GoogleMaps

Paratypes: 10♂, 6♀, same data as HT, GS 1378, 1377 ( CDB; CGM/ USTTB) ; ♂, ♀, “ MALI / Mopti region / Dogon Plateau, 400 - 800 m / Nov. to Dec. 2011 / leg. Traore & al.,” GS 29343, 29344 (CGM/ USTTB) .

Description. Male ( Figs 2–4 View Figures 1–5 ). Flagellum, head, thorax and abdomen covered with speckled light and dark straw scales. Forewing. Forewing length: 15–17 mm. Somewhat triangular with slightly wavy outer margin and prominent rounded apex. Basal, medial, and outer fields divided with slightly wavy brown medial lines and covered with speckled straw, yellow and brown scales; coloration gets darker towards outer margin; medial field has brown discal dot. Outer field divided with faint somewhat crenulated brown fascia into proximal and distal halves. Fringe speckled brown and straw. Hindwing. Somewhat oval with a concavity in costal margin and wavy outer margin. Mediobasal field covered with straw and brown scales; costal field covered with speckled straw, yellow and brown scales, getting darker towards outer margin; outer field covered with speckled straw, red and brown scales; outer margin brown. Fringe speckled straw and brown. Genitalia ( Figs 7–8 View Figures 6–10 ). Tegumen a thin band with small knob-like dorsolateral socii; socii apically covered with setae. Vinculum overgrown with a pair of ventrolateral somewhat claw-like outgrowths. Cucullus finger-shaped, grown with knob-like sacculus, both covered with setae. Annelus reduced to thin band with a pair of lateral knob-like extensions, covered with setae; connected with anal tube by long narrow sclerotized plate. Juxta unpronounced, fused with phallus. Phallus short, cylindrical, laterocaudally bears a pair of claw-like outgrows. Vesica bivalved, each extension about twice shorter than phallus, finger-like. Female ( Fig. 5 View Figures 1–5 ). Similar to male in coloration and wing pattern but larger, with broader forewings. Forewing length 24.5–25 mm. Genitalia ( Figs 9–10 View Figures 6–10 ). Papilla anales semioval, densely covered with setae. Posterior apophyses a little longer than anterior ones. Sterigma a sclerotized ring. Ductus bursae reduced. Bursa copulatrix ovoid, bears c-shaped signum with serrated surface.

Diagnosis. Leipoxais buttafuoco sp. n. differs from L. mustelina with overall lighter coloration (compare Figs 2–5 and 1 View Figures 1–5 ) and distribution in West African Sahel. Distribution. West Sudanian savanna in Mali. Biology. Adults were collected in November–January from altitudes of 400– 800 m. Preimaginal stages unknown. Etymology. The species is named in honor of the philanthropist Daniel P. Buttafuoco (New York, USA). Dan is an attorney and the founder of a leading personal injury law firm. The firm helps accident and injury victims to rebuild their lives. As a passionate collector of rare and unique historical bibles he founded the Historical Bible Society. Dan is dedicated to preserve and document the planet’s biodiversity. He has been dedicated to this objective and has built a major collection of insects originating from endangered habitats threatened by environmental destruction and climate change. One of his focuses is the Sahel zone in Africa which has been poorly researched with limited data and insect species. His ongoing collection is a time capsule for future generations of scientists, enabling them to utilize his collections to evaluate the changes in local and regional biodiversity.

Acknowledgments

We are grateful to the late Prof. Dr. Vasiliy D. Kravchenko (Tel Aviv University, Israel / USTTB, Bamako, Mali) for his dedicated entomological work in Mali: operating trapping systems, training local entomologists, and taking care of the collected material under harsh conditions. We are thankful to the USTTB which allowed us to use their field station near Ouronina, to the numerous village councils that approved our activities, and to the citizens of the surrounding villages that kindly tolerated our activities on their lands.

We thank Daniel Buttafuoco (CDB) for providing us with the research material and valuable ecological information. His outstanding collection serves as a base for the description of numerous new species for science.
