Type locality and specimens. Hab [itat]. Paraguay: Rio Apa (Balzan) .

Dimensions. Long. corp. mm. 20; lat. corp. mm. 1–2 [body length 20 mm, body width 1–2 mm].

Type material. Syntype ♂ ( ZMH-A0000674 ). PARAGUAY: Apa River (“ Rio Apa ”) [ca. 22°06’S, 58°02’W] GoogleMaps .

Preservation. 1 jar: Label. Newportia balzanii Silv. ex typis Rio Apa Argentinien Mus. Turin C. VII.1903 .

Old type catalogue. Weidner (1960), p. 68, No. 53. Paratype 1 (as balzani).

Collection remarks. The specimen was collected by the Italian explorer and zoologist Luigi Balzan (1865– 1983) and came from the collection of the Museum of Natural History in Turin ( Museo Regionale die Scienze Naturali) where additional syntypes are likely preserved. The Rio Apa is located in Paraguay as Silvestri mentioned, not in Argentina (as documented on the label) .

Current systematic position. Tidops balzanii (Silvestri, 1895) ; transferred from Newportia by Schileko & Minelli (1998: 293).
