Diagnosis. Males differ from those of other Australian Castianeirinae in the absence of a paracymbial spine and cylindrical male palpal tibia, and females differ from those of Ozcopa , which they closely resemble, in the much smaller copulatory fossae. Males of Copa kabana sp. nov. differ from those species in the sinuous, not spiralled embolus ( Fig. 36b View FIGURE 36 ) and females in the shorter copulatory ducts ( Fig. 36e View FIGURE 36 ).
Etymology. The species epithet is a phonetic version of the famous beach in Brasil, Copacabana.
Description holotype male QM S31538 View Materials
Carapace 3.52 long, 2.64 wide. Abdomen 2.96 long, 1.92 wide. Total length 6.5.
Colour: carapace orange brown with dark brown scallops along edges and band of brown laterally and on clypeus (darkest in posterior third); legs orange brown, femora darker with brown areas distally on femora I–III, tibiae III and IV, and in basal half of metatarsi IV; a bdomen brown dorsally with central pallid region, narrowing posteriorly, ventrally dark brown with narrow pallid flanks. Sternum, maxillae and coxae light orange brown. Carapace: light cover of pallid and black feathery hairs with few long bristles; margins with evenly sparse horizontally directed short black setae; fovea straight, closed. Lateral profile of carapace ( Fig. 3b View FIGURE 3 ): high but more or less flat or slightly arched for its length; marginally highest point behind fovea at shallowly sloping posterior declivity; eyes set behind clypeus edge. Retrolateral face of large chelicerae smooth. Eyes: AME largest; with pile of white hairs lateral of group. Chelicerae: vertical and deep (front to back); fang shield small rounded. Fang slightly diagonal, groove long, almost vertical; two teeth high on retromargin and one large and one small basally on promargin plus very small tooth distally. Retrobasal ridge low, distinct, setose. Maxillae: serrula long; inner margin excavate, sloping, outer convex; anterior edge truncate. Labium ca. as long as wide. Sternum widely cordate, intercoxal projections on I/II, II/III; separate pre-coxal sclerites at II–IV; uniformly and lightly setose. Legs: trochanters clearly notched, ca. twice as wide as deep; light to very light cover of dark feathery hairs on femora to metatarsi; erect scopula hairs sparse on metatarsi and tarsi I and II. Spines: (erect) I: fe pv1p2d3r4; pa 0; ti v2.2.2; me v2.2. II: fe pv1p2d3r3; pa 0; ti v2.2.2; me v2.2. III: fe p3d3r3; pa 0; ti p2d1r2v2.2.2; me p3r3v2.2.2. IV: fe p3d3r2; pa 0; p2r2v2.2.2; me p3r3v2.2.2. Palp: fe p1d2; rest long bristles. Claws: with ca. 5 teeth with tufts similar on I and IV. Abdomen: covered with feathery hairs. Scutes: dorsal small, oval, lightly sclerotised; genital scute without anterior collar or thickened edge; tracheal spiracle overhung by small triangular scute with posterior nipple. Pedicel a small winged triangle from below, not fused to sternum. Spinnerets: PLS about 2/3 size of ALS and clearly bigger than PMS. Palp: tibia cylindrical, save for shallow ventral depression for length; cymbium long, without paracymbial spine, symmetrical groove to tip, without apical spine or scopula; large trianguloid scooped plate is part of basal haematodocha; bulb simple, narrow pyriform with slight enlargement at embolus base, but then tapering gradually in long fine gently curved hook; sperm duct large, overlaps itself basally and mid-distally, then undulates into embolus; prolateral cymbium basally with depression locking with opposed tibial process.
Allotype female QM S31539 View Materials . Like ♂ except as follows:
Carapace 3.44 long, 2.48 wide. Abdomen 4.24 long, 2.80 wide. Total length 7.7.
Chelicerae with one large and one small basal tooth on promargin, two large on retromargin; fang shield distinct, squared with many long thick curved bristles; retrobasally with band of short thorn-like setae. Spines: on tibiae I and II and metatarsi, ventral spines long strong and overlapping (5–10%); other leg spines also long, strong. I: fe pv1p2d3r1; ti v2.2.2; me v2.2. II: fe pv1p2d3r2; ti v2.2.2; me v2.2. III: fe p3d3r3; pa 1 apical bristle; ti p2d1r2v.2.2.0; me p3r3v2.2.3. IV: fe p2d3r2; pa 1 apical bristle; ti p2d1r2v1.2.2; me p3r3v2.2.3(1). Palp: fe p1d2; pa p1d2; ti p2 basal d1; ta p2r1, all basal, v3 apically. Legs: feathery hairs on femora–metatarsi; no scopula. Claw tufts dense, similar on I and IV. 5–7 teeth on paired claws. Palp: slender curved claw with ca. 3 small teeth; tarsus converges gently to tip without dense hairs of pre-apical widening. Abdomen: with small square scute on anterior face. Spinnerets: PMS large with three enlarged cylindrical gland spigots apically; PLS slightly smaller than ALS with 2 large cylindrical gland spigots, ALS with ental subfield of small pyriform gland spigots. Tracheal scute like ♂. No dorsal or ventral scute, weakly sclerotised genital scute. Epigyne: broad with two very small lateral fossae directed medially, internally with copulatory ducts and ridges directed medially, large anterior lobe and beanshaped smaller posterior lobe.
Distribution and Habitat. Widespread in rainforests of south-eastern Queensland to northern New South Wales, from Kroombit Tops , through the Conondale and D'Aguilar Ranges to the Border Ranges.
