Revised description. Small, stocky ovate shell; apical angle ~77°. Protoconch unknown. Teleoconch of up to four whorls; suture shallowly undulating. First teleoconch whorls angled slightly below mid-whorl with shallow subsutural ramp. Eight broad axial ribs most prominent along shoulder, overrun by close-set adis, IP and abis over subsutural ramp, P1 more prominent, slightly weaker P2 with weak secondary below. Penultimate and last whorl with very broad, swollen subsutural collar and concave subsutural ramp with broad, scabrose adis, IP and abis, P1 prominent, P2 close to the abapical suture. Last whorl attaining ~80% of total height, ovate with distinct shoulder. P1–P6 and ADP, MP forming broad, rounded, subequal cords separated by narrower interspaces with narrow, scabrose s1–s6. ABP slightly weaker. Shell surface strongly scabrose on subsutural collar and ramp. Fasciole slightly swollen, indistinct, with weakly scabrose spiral cords, delimited by narrow groove. Aperture moderately wide, ovate; outer lip not thickened with about seven lirae within (D1, D2, D3 distinguishable). Adapical tip of aperture thickened bearing moderately incised anal canal; siphonal canal moderately short, open, wide, slightly deflected to the left. Columella weakly excavated, smooth, slightly twisted at siphonal canal. Columellar callus thickened forming broad, adherent rim.
Discussion. This species is unique within the Paratethyan assemblages due to its broad, swollen, scabrose subsutural collar. The specimen from the Badenian of Bulgaria, illustrated as this species by Kojumdgieva in Kojumdgieva & Strachimirov (1960), differs in its conical last whorl and narrower aperture. The illustration does not allow an identification of that specimen.
Paleoenvironment. Coastal, inner neritic; maybe in vicinity of oyster biostromes and mangroves ( Harzhauser et al. 2002).
Distribution in Central Paratethys. Karpatian (Early Miocene): Korneuburg Basin: Weinsteig ( Austria) ( Hoernes & Auinger 1890).
Genus Ocinebrina Jousseaume, 1880
Type species. Murex corallinus Scacchi, 1836 View in CoL ; original designation by Jousseaume (1880: 335); Present-day, Mediterranean Sea.
Comments. We place five Paratethyan species in Ocinebrina . Ocinebrina bellissima sp. nov., O. landaui Kovács, 2019 and O. imbricata ( Brocchi, 1814) are broader than present day Ocinebrina species. Ocinebrina billus (De Gregorio, 1885a) displays a high spire and has a shorter and a more rounded aperture than the preceding species and has rounded denticles as in extant Ocinebrina species. Ocinebrina praescalaris sp. nov. has a slender profile and a subovate aperture as in present-day Ocinebrina but displays elongated denticles. We therefore treat these two Paratethyan species as? Ocinebrina , although not all their characters are typical of this genus. A more comprehensive revision would be required to clarify the taxonomy of the western European fossil species classified in Ocinebrina .
