Notes

Isoperla similis is currently known as the Black Stripetail ( Stark et al. 2012). Although this species is presently considered as distributed from Quebec and Nova Scotia south to North Carolina and Tennessee ( Szczytko and Kondratieff 2015, DeWalt et al. 2024), prior records, especially from the Appalachian Mountains, need to be reassessed for accuracy due to the recent description of I. pseudosimilis . Szczytko and Kondratieff (2015) provided confirmation of this species from six states and noted that I. similis is mainly present in the Piedmont Plateau and the Atlantic Coastal Plain. Our limited collections of this species in New York have found adults in mid-May (Fig. 38 View Figure 38 ). All confirmed New York localities are from elevations ranging from 119-549 m asl (Fig. 39 View Figure 39 ), but only from Level IV Ecoregions Catskills Transition (60 c) and Cape Cod / Long Island (84 a) (Fig. 43 e View Figure 43 e ). Additional collecting on Long Island and other remnant relatively pristine streams of New York’s Atlantic Coastal Plain is needed to determine the conservation status of this species in the state.
