DIAGNOSIS: A small dark Canthophorus species ( Figure 1), 4.5–5.5 mm long. Head, pronotum and scutellum blackish brown, pronotum with narrow yellowish white margin. Clavus and corium lighter brown, margin of exocorium yellowish white. Membrane light greyish brown.

In general appearance very similar to Canthophorus maculipes , but exocorium with somewhat broader white margin, especially basally. The male genitalia provide the most reliable diagnostic characters, in particular the sclerified parts of the conjunctival process of the aedeagus and the parameres ( Figure 2). Female genitalia of these species have not been studied.

DISTRIBUTION: Canthophorus fuscipennis is currently known from France, Italy, Portugal, Spain ( Lis, 2006) and Madeira. In France it is restricted to the south, including the Mediterranean region ( Dusoulier & Lupoli, 2006). However, due to confusion with C. maculipes its actual distribution may be larger than the above suggests.

DISCUSSION: The male genitalia of the type specimens of C. fuscipennis and the closely related C. maculipes have never been illustrated. Therefore the male genitalia of the present specimens from Madeira were compared with specimens from France, especially from Beaune, the type locality of Canthophorus fuscipennis . According to Dusoulier (in litt. 2015), C. maculipes is not known from the Beaune area, it therefore seems justified to consider the specimens from that locality to be C. fuscipennis .

The record of Canthophorus dubius (Scopoli, 1763) from Madeira is apparently based on the specimen that Walker used to describe his Sehirus aeneus (China, 1930: 4). Since there are no other published records of C. dubius from Madeira, its presence there needs to be confirmed.
