Diagnosis. This species is distinguished from other species of the E. (En.) valentis species group by the occiput bearing several irregular rows of strong setae, usually four marginal scutellar setae, halter with dark knob, male hind femur with single inner medial knob, separate from anteroventral process ( Figs 257, 258 View FIGURES 257–261 ), and wing length less than 7 mm.
Redescription. Wing length 5.9–6.8 mm. Male. Similar to E. (En.) aeripes , except as follows: head with occiput bearing several irregular rows of strong setae, similar in size to ocellar setae. Postpedicel long and tapered, 3× longer than basal width; stylus slightly longer than basal width of postpedicel. Palpus orange brown.
Thorax with scutum with two pairs of broad, well-separated brownish vittae. Scutum with 1 long and 1 shorter posterior npl, with 1–3 shorter anterior npl. Scutellum usually with 2 pairs of long sctl, widely separated medially.
Hind femur with anteroventral process digitiform with tuft of black apical setae and numerous setae on stalk, without short basal lobe; single short knob-like lobe medial to digitiform anteroventral process; apex with preapical row of 3–5 flattened, black posterior setae; preapical anterior seta weakly differentiated ( Figs 257, 258 View FIGURES 257–261 ). Hind tibia straight at base, with broad, somewhat flattened anteroventral digitiform process on basal quarter, with appressed black setae on outer margin, reduced to stub-like setae apically; posteroventrally with similar broad, rounded process, not flattened dorsally, with crown of black apical setae, longer than setae on anteroventral process ( Figs 257, 258 View FIGURES 257–261 ).
Wing with R 5 ending anterior to wing tip. Halter with dark knob.
Abdomen without posterior margin of tergites glossy. Terminalia ( Fig. 264 View FIGURES 262–265 ): cercus without knob-like projection in apical cleft. Hypandrium not prolonged laterally.
Female. Similar to male, except as follows: hindleg without modified setae and processes; abdomen with posterior margins of tergite 5 and 6 glossy; tergites 7 and 8 entirely glossy; abdominal pleural membrane with darkened, expanded region.
Geographical distribution and seasonal occurrence ( Fig. 284 View FIGURES 284–285 ). Empis (En.) dolabraria is known only from central California. Adults have been collected from March to June.
Nuptial gift presentation. Form unknown.
