Diagnosis. This species is distinguished from other species of the E. (En.) valentis species group by the occiput bearing two irregular rows of strong setae ( Fig. 268 View FIGURES 266–274 ), four marginal scutellar setae, tuft of black basal costal setae distinct from distal costal setae, male hind femur with tuft of setae arising directly from inflated anteroventral process and without additional lobes ( Figs 269, 270 View FIGURES 266–274 ), and wing length usually less than 7 mm.

Redescription. Wing length 5.8–7.0 mm. Male. Similar to E. (En.) aeripes , except as follows: head with occiput bearing two irregular rows of strong setae ( Fig. 268 View FIGURES 266–274 ).

Thorax with scutum with 2 pairs of broad brownish vittae, generally fading beyond transverse suture. Scutum with 1–2 posterior npl. Scutellum with 2 pairs of strong sctl, widely separated medially.

Legs with coxae clothed in dense greyish pruinescence, concolourous with pleura dorsally changing to orange brown ventrally, similar to femora. Hind femur and tibia with similar modified processes and setae as E. (En.) aeripes ( Figs 268–270 View FIGURES 266–274 ).

Wing with tuft of black basal costal setae distinct from row of distal costal setae.

Terminalia ( Fig. 276 View FIGURES 275–276 ): indistinguishable from E. (En.) aeripes .

Female. Similar to male, except as follows: hindleg without modified setae and processes; abdominal pleural membrane with darkened, expanded region.

Geographical distribution and seasonal occurrence ( Fig. 284 View FIGURES 284–285 ). Empis (En.) mixopolia is known from eastern Washington, eastern Oregon, and Idaho. Adults have been collected from May to July.

Nuptial gift presentation. Form unknown.
