Luehea alternifolia (Mill.) Mabberley (2002: 254) View in CoL
≡ Cedrus alternifolius Miller (1768: 118) . nom. rej.
Type:— MEXICO. Yucatan: Campeche, 1730, Houstoun s.n. (holotype BM! [ BM013823796 ]) .
[= Luehea speciosa Willdenow (1801: 410) ]
Miller (1768) analysed the Houstoun`s collection from Mexico to describe the species Cedrus alternifolius , without specifying a repository herbarium. Houstoun sent his collections in 1730 to Miller , who worked at Chelsea Garden , and his herbarium was subsequently purchased by Banks in 1774 and incorporated into the BM herbarium ( Stafleu & Cowan 1976 –1988: 342; 491). We found only one specimen of Houstoun s.n. in BM ( Fig. 1 View FIGURE 1 ), that presents much congruence with the protologue, such as the collector`s name, the date, location, and the morphological characters described, in addition to the original label written by Houstoun. A neotype is designated assuming the type material of Cedrus alternifolius was extinct Mabberley (2002). However, the original material is extant at BM. Hence following Arts. 9.1 and 9.19 of the ICN, the choice of the specimen Houstoun s.n. (BM013823796) must be correct as a holotype of the name L. alternifolia .
