ListedȱbyȱRafflesȱ(1822)ȱasȱ Picus tristis ,ȱaȱnameȱfirstȱusedȱbyȱHorsfieldȱinȱ1821,ȱandȱStanleyȱ treated a male specimen under this name in 1825. Stanley annotated the entry with the synonyms ‘ P. strickup ( P. poicilophos = paecilophos )ȱPl.ȱColȱ197’ȱfromȱVigors’ȱcatalogueȱ(Rafflesȱ 1830). The vernacular name used by Stanley is illegible (but is perhaps ‘Striated crowned woodpecker’). The subspecies occurring on Sumatra is grammithorax, which was not described until 1862. The skin of the relaxed mount is at NML (accession number D3791).
