galt lange als Form des P. albipes (GRAVENHORST, 1802) , weshalb ältere Meldungen des P. albipes unsicher sind. Nach SCHILLHAMMER (2011: 434) ist die seltene Art von Westeuropa bis in den Kaukasus bekannt. Philonthus alpinus ist in Deutschland weit verbreitet (vgl. BLEICH et al. 2019), nach HOFMANN (2019) aber noch nicht in Hessen nachgewiesen. Die koprophile Art lebt vorwiegend auf Viehweiden in Pferde- und Rinderdung (KOCH 1989a: 297), wo sie andere Koprophile und deren Larven jagt. Philonthus alpinus wurde auf einer Rinderweide im Nordosten des Haimbergs in Rinderdung nachgewiesen.
