Phthiarella caliginosa Brailovsky and Barrera , new species

( Figs. 3‒4, 68‒71)

Diagnosis. Related to P. femorata (Breddin 1901) in having the pronotal disk, scutellum, clavus, corium, abdominal sterna III-VII and male genital capsule entirely metallic bluish green. The femora of P. femorata are yellow and in P. caliginosa sp. nov., metallic bluish green with basal joint yellow.

Description. Holotype male. Body length 16.18. Head: length 2.15; width across eyes 2.05; interocular distance 1.07; interocellar distance 0.52; preocular distance 1.12; length antennal segments: I 3.82, II, 4.60, III, 3.20, IV, 5.75; pronotum: total length 2.22; maximum width across humeral angles 4.55; scutellum: length 1.70; width 1.95.

Dorsal coloration. Head metallic bluish green with short yellow spot behind each ocelli; antennal segment I shiny reddish brown with metallic bluish green reflections, II–III shiny reddish brown, and IV dull brown; pronotum, scutellum, clavus, corium and connexival segments metallic bluish green; hemelytral membrane dark brown with metallic bluish green reflections; dorsal abdominal segments III–IV yellowish orange, V–VII black with metallic bluish green reflections. Ventral coloration. Head metallic bluish green with short yellow spot at each side of midline near collar; rostral segment I metallic bluish green, II–III shiny brown with yellow marks and IV shiny brown; pro-, meso-, and metasternum, anterior and posterior lobe of metathoracic peritreme, inner border of fore acetabulae near the anterior third, and total inner margin of meso-, and meta-acetabulae yellowish orange; pro-, meso-, and metapleura metallic bluish green; coxae and trochanters yellowish orange; femora metallic green with basal joint yellowish orange; tibiae and tarsi dark brown with metallic bluish green reflections; abdominal sterna III–VII and genital capsule metallic green.

Structure. Head. Rostrum reaching posterior margin of abdominal sternite IV. Thorax. Humeral angles of pronotum with short, acute spine, directed outward. Genital capsule. Posteroventral edge sinuate to almost straight; lateral angles rounded, slightly folded inward. Parameres. Figs. 68‒71.

Female. Unknown.

Etymology. From the Latin adjective “ caliginosus”, meaning dark, named for the dark brown coloration of the femora.

Type locality. Ecuador, Sucumbíos .

PARATYPE: 1 male, ECUADOR: Provincia Napo, vic. Puerto Misahuallí , 1650–1900 m, 1°2̕ 4.2̕̕ S –77°39̕ 49.2̕ W, collected on fish carrion baited butterfly trap, 5–19–IX–1998, Joe E. Eger ( UNAM) .
