Phthiarella lanterna Brailovsky and Barrera , new species

( Figs. 1‒2)

Diagnosis. Like P. ignota sp. nov., P. lanterna sp. nov., has the coxae, trochanteres and basal joint of femora yellowish orange; corium without yellow to yellowish orange transverse fascia, and anterior lobe of pronotal disk with incomplete wide yellow to yellowish orange transverse fascia not touching the anterolateral borders. Phthiarella lanterna sp. nov., is a large species longer than 18.60 ( versus shorter than 17.00); antenna segment II longer than 4.95 ( versus shorter than 4.75); posterior lobe of pronotum, scutellum, clavus and corium black with bluish purple reflections ( versus metallic green reflections) and hemelytral membrane dark brown with bluish reflections ( versus entirely dark brown).

Description. Holotype male. Body length 18.78. Head: length 2.50; width across eyes 2.30; interocular distance 1.22; interocellar distance 0.56; preocular distance 1.42; length antennal segments: I 4.60, II, 5.02, III, 3.57, IV, 6.85; pronotum: total length 2.95; maximum width across humeral angles 5.25; scutellum: length 2.00; width 2.15.

Dorsal coloration. Head metallic green with short yellow spot behind each ocelli; antennal segments I–II black with metallic green reflections, III–IV black to dark brown; pronotum with collar, calli, anterolateral borders and humeral spine metallic green; anterior lobe with wide yellowish orange transverse fascia not reaching the anterolateral borders; posterior lobe black with bluish purple reflections; scutellum, clavus and corium black with bluish purple reflections; hemelytral membrane dark brown with bluish reflections; connexival segments III–VII black with upper border metallic green; dorsal abdominal segments III–V orange, VI–VII black. Ventral coloration. Head metallic green; rostral segment I metallic green, II–IV dark brown; pro-, meso-, and metasternum yellow; pro-, meso-, and metapleura metallic green, with inner border of meso-acetabulae, inner margin of meta-acetabulae and anterior and posterior lobe of metathoracic peritreme yellowish orange; evaporative area black; coxae and trochanters yellowish orange; femora black with metallic green reflections and basal joint yellowish orange; tibiae and tarsi reddish brown; abdominal sterna III–VII, pleural margin of abdominal sterna III–VII and genital capsule metallic green.

Structure. Head. Rostrum reaching posterior margin of abdominal sternite IV. Thorax. Humeral angles thick at base, tapering into short acute spine. Genital capsula. Posteroventral edge gently sinuate to straight; lateral margins rounded, slightly folded inward.

Female. Unknown.

Etymology. From the Latin “lanternus-a” meaning lamp, torch, light.

Type locality. Ecuador, Province Napo .
