Discussion

The taxonomic composition of the Curculionoidea of the North-East Altai is represented by 238 species of 116 genera belonging to the following families: Nemonychidae – one species, Anthribidae – three species, Rhynchitidae – eleven species, Attelabidae – two species, Brentidae – 22 species, Curculionidae – 157 species and Scolytidae – 41 species. In total, four species ( Ceutorhynchus matisi , Homorosoma asperum , Dorytomus malachovi and Olamus salicinus ) are firstly recorded for the fauna of Altai Republic and 126 species for the fauna of the North-East Altai. The most diverse family Curculionidae is in the territory of the North-East Altai with the subfamilies Erirhininae – five species, Molytinae – 18 species, Lixinae – nine species, Dryophthorinae – one species, Cossoninae – five species, Conoderinae – 32 species, Curculioninae – 31 species and Entiminnae – 55 species.

In the studied region, 158 species of weevils are recorded only in the lowlands, 14 species only in the midlands, and the highland complex is represented by only eight species ( Table 1). In addition to the identified groups, there are species that occur in more than one zone. For example, two species ( Trichalophus maklini and Donus lepidus ) are in the midland zone, and 27 species in the midland – highland zone. In addition, 15 species are found in all altitudinal zones of the region. The species of the highland complex are represented by meadow ( Lepyrus sokolovi , Asiodonus opanassenkoi , A. sajanicus and Polydrusus fulvicornis ) and tundra forms ( Trichalophus biguttatus ) in terms of biotopic confinement. Trophically, these species are associated with Fabaceae ( Hedysarum ), Betulaceae or develop on Salix . The base of the midland complex is made up of species associated with forest biotopes (10 species), which are mono- and oligophages of conifers ( Hylobius pinastri , Pissodes harcyniae , Phloeotribus spinulosus , Carphoborus cholodkovskyi , Dendroctonus micans , Pityophthorus micrographus , Pityogenes conjunctus , P. saalasi ) and some Rosaceae ( Anthonomus conspersus и Trichalophus quadriguttatus ). The midland complex also includes species associated with grasslands. There is one species ( Notaris aethiops ) that prefers cold wet biotopes and develops on Carex along the banks of water bodies. The highland species show the greatest diversity (158 species), the meadow (43) and forest (48) species form its basis.

The steppe (26) and near-water (15) species are represented less common. The forest species are divided into inhabitants of conifer (23), deciduous (24) and conifer and deciduous polyphagous species (2). Some meadow species are associated with shrub vegetation (18), of which seven develop on Rosaceae , 3 species are monophages of Salix . The rest are restricted to herbaceous vegetation: monophages (seven species) and oligophages (27 species) on Fabaceae , Asteraceae (10 species) and Polygonaceae (six species). There are single species developing on Brassicaceae (three species), Chenopodioideae (three species), Boraginaceae (three species), Apiaceae (two species), Plantaginaceae (two species), Poaceae (two species), Cyperaceae (two species) and sedges and cereals (a species). Of particular interest are the species found throughout the profile from the lowlands to the highlands. Most of them are concentrated in the midland zone – these are bark beetles that are oligophages of coniferous trees. The other species are either polyphages, which allows them to occupy different biotopes over the entire altitude range, or monophages Betula ( Trichapion simile ), Salix ( Lepyrus volgensis ) and Carex ( Notaris sp. ).

The weevil fauna of the North-East Altai includes 225 species, with species richness decreasing with altitude ( Table 1). The greatest taxonomic diversity is found in the highland zone, due to the mosaic of forest (coniferous and deciduous forests) and open (meadow, steppe, near-water) biotopes. The midland complex, on the other hand, is not as diverse and is represented mainly by forest species – conifers and some grassland species. The poorest in terms of taxonomic diversity of weevils is the highland complex.

This altitudinal distribution of Curculionoidea in the altitudinal gradient can be explained by the fact that, although this group of beetles is widespread in all natural zones except arctic deserts, it reaches its maximum diversity in tropical regions. The decline in diversity from the lowlands to the highlands may be due to the small proportion of the most cold-resistant species in this group of beetles, as well as the lack of food plants.

In addition to the modern entomofauna of the region, two late Pleistocene entomocomplexes (Lebed and Kebezen) are known for the North-East Altai, which include 33 species from 21 genera of Curculionoidea ( Gurina et al. 2024, 2025). The majority, 24 species, are currently present in the region, while nine species ( Hemitrichapion tschernovi , Notaris altaica , Thryogenes nereis , Ceutorhynchus erysimi , Orobitis cyanea , Phyllobius contemptus , Otiorhynchus krattereri , O. af. ursus and Carphoborus teplouchovi ) are absent from the modern fauna of the North-East Altai. The absence of these species in the modern entomofauna can be explained by two main factors: firstly, the change in landscape and climatic conditions from the late Pleistocene to the present. Probably the colder and less humid conditions of the Pleistocene in the North-East Altai were suitable for the low mountain habitat of species such as Hemitrichapion tschernovi , Notaris altaica , Otiorhynchus krattereri and O. af. ursus. These species changed their ranges at the beginning of the Holocene. Secondly, the absence of other species ( Thryogenes nereis , Ceutorhynchus erysimi , Orobitis cyanea , Phyllobius contemptus and Carphoborus teplouchovi ) is probably due to their rarer occurrence.
