Description. Female. Body length 4.5 mm; fore wing length 3.3 mm.
Head. Antennae filiform, 35-segmented. Scape 1.7 × as long as its maximum width. First flagellar segment 6.0 × as long as its apical width, 1.2 × as long as second segment. Penultimate segment 4.2 × as long as wide, 1.1 × as long as apical segment. Head width (dorsal view) 1.45 × its median length, 1.25 × as wide as mesoscutum. Head behind eyes (dorsal view) weakly convex and roundly narrowed; transverse diameter of eye 1.6 × length of temple. Ocelli small, arranged in triangle with base 1.2 × its sides; POL: Od: OOL = 3.0: 3.0: 9.0. Vertex smooth, medially with fine to very fine transverse aciculation; frons entirely, distinctly, densely and weakly curvedly transversely striate. Eye glabrous, 1.1 × as high as broad. Malar space 0.55 × eye height and basal width of mandible. Temple smooth. Face in sublateral stripes densely and distinctly transversely striate with additional fine reticulation, smooth medially and finely rugulose to smooth laterally. Face width 1.25 × eye height and 1.25 × as long as height of face and clypeus combined. Hypoclypeal depression medium-sized and round, its width 0.9 × distance from edge of depression to eye, 0.45 × width of face. Occipital carina complete dorsally, ventrally not joined with hypostomal carina being obliterated upper base of mandible.
Mesosoma. Length of mesosoma 2.1 × its height. Pronotal keel distinct, its posterior branch rather coarse, weakly separated from posterior margin of pronotum; anterior branch of carina distinct and situated submedially. Mesoscutum not highly and gently-roundly elevated above pronotum, its median lobe weakly convex anteriorly and without anterolateral corners. Mesoscutum distinctly and densely granulate, its median lobe anteriorly without granules situated in fine transverse lines, with long and dense rugae along notauli and laterally, with three distinct and convergent posteriorly carinae in medioposterior half; mostly glabrous, with rather dense, long and semi-erect or erect golden setae arranged in wide stripe along notauli and in single line laterally. Notauli wide, coarsely densely crenulate, deep anteriorly and more shallow posteriorly. Prescutellar depression rather deep, long, with five curved carinae, finely and densely rugulose, 0.4 × as long as scutellum. Scutellum entirely densely and finely to very finely granulate-coriaceous, without rugae, weakly convex, with lateral carinae. Mesopleuron entirely densely granulate-coriaceous with distinct striation below and posteriorly. Subalar depression shallow, rather narrow, coarsely rugose-striate and with granulation. Precoxal sulcus rather wide, sinuate, deep, straight and oblique in anterior 0.6, shallow and curved in posterior 0.4, densely crenulate, running along entire lower part of mesopleuron. Propodeum with low and wide lateral tubercles, with basolateral areas distinctly delineated by carinae and densely granulate with rugosity along carinae, rest part of propodeum sparsely striate and with dense and finely reticulation; areola rather wide and medium-sized; basal carina present in basal quarter, 0.7 × as long as anterior fork of areola.
Wings. Fore wing 4.0 × as long as wide. Vein r arising weakly behind middle of pterostigma. 3-SR: r: SR1: 2-SR = 25: 7: 43: 18. Second submarginal cell not narrowed distally, its length about 4.0 × maximum width, 1.3 × length of first subdiscal cell. Vein CU1a not interstitial, arising almost from middle of posterior margin of first subdiscal cell. Hind wing vein M+CU 0.55 × as long as vein 1-M. Vein m-cu interstitial, oblique towards base of wing, faintly infuscate.
Legs. Hind coxa dorsally weakly rugulose-striate with fine additional granulation, finely and densely granulate laterally, with distinct basoventral corner and tooth. Hind femur elongate-oval, almost entirely smooth, 3.5 × as long as wide. Hind tibia apically with three slender spines on outer side. Dorsal surface of hind tibia with very long, rather sparse and semi-erect or erect setae, their length 1.1–1.6 × maximum width of tibia. Hind tarsus 0.9 × as long as hind tibia. Hind basitarsus 0.6 × as long as second-fifth segments combined. Second segment of hind tarsus 0.55 × as long as basitarsus, 1.6 × as long as fifth segment (without pretarsus).
Metasoma. Petiole (lateral view) almost straight ventrally, dorsally very weakly arched in basal 0.5 and straight in apical 0.5, thickened in basal 0.3; distinctly widened in apical fifth (dorsal view), with weak spiracular tubercles in weakly widened basal third. Length of petiole 2.7 × its apical width, 1.9 × length of propodeum. Second tergite without laterotergites. Median length of second and third tergites combined 1.4 × basal width of second tergite, 0.55 × as long as their maximum width. Second suture absent. Petiole distinctly and sparsely longitudinally striate, with dense and distinct reticulation between striae. Remaining tergites entirely smooth. Ovipositor straight. Ovipositor sheath 3.2 × as long as petiole, 1.3 × as long as metasoma, 2.2 × as long as mesosoma, as long as fore wing.
Colour. Head yellow with brownish yellow spots on face and behind eyes. Mesosoma yellowish brown, laterally with darkened stripes. Petiole dark reddish brown to black, remaining metasoma yellowish brown with brownish spots. Antennae yellow to brownish brown in basal third, brown in apical two-thirds, without pale subapical segments. Palpi whitish. Legs yellow to brownish yellow, all femora (especially hind one) in apical thirds or half pale brown to brown, hind coxa entirely brownish yellow, hind tibia mainly yellow, brown on short basal and submedian area. Ovipositor sheath yellow in basal half and brown in apical half. Fore wing faintly and evenly infuscate. Pterostigma brown, pale yellow in basal third.
Male Unknown.
Material examined. Holotype. female, China, Guangdong Prov., Shixing Chebaling , 21.VIII.2003, Xu Zaifu, No. 20052613 ( ZJUH).
Comparative diagnosis. This new species belongs to the S. fasciatus Walker species group. Spathius suberymanthus sp. nov. is similar to S. erymanthus Nixon , but differs in having the body paler (darker in S. erymanthus ), vertex partly finely aciculate (entirely smooth in S. erymanthus ), antennae arranged not in equilateral triangle (arranged in equilateral triangle in S. erymanthus ), mesoscutum with dense and long rugae (with short and fine rugae in S. erymanthus ), propodeal areola distinctly delineated (not defined in S. erymanthus ), and recurrent vein weakly postfurcal (distinctly postfurcal in S. erymanthus ).
Etymology. From “sub” (Latin for “under”) because of it is similar to S. erymanthus .
Distribution. China (Guangdong).
