2.5 | Stable isotope analysis
All samples were dried in an oven (60 C) for 48 h before further processing. Fish fin clips were broken into small pieces due to constraints with size of sample, and all other samples were ground to a fine pow- der before being weighed into subsamples in tin capsules ( 1–1.2 mg for animal material and 3–3.2 mg for plant material). Samples were combusted in an Elemental Combustion System 4010 elemental analyser connected to a Delta Plus XP continuous-flow isotope-ratio mass spectrometer. All isotope values were reported relative to Vienna PeeDee Belemnite carbonate and atmospheric nitrogen international standards. In-house standards of E. masquinongy muscle, bovine liver, nicotinamide, and USGS 61 (USGS, Reston, VA, USA;
35.1 ± 0.13‰ and 2.9 ± 0.1‰) were used to calculate analytical error (0.1‰ for δ 13 C and δ 15 N).
